Folks, Of all the military .223 headstamps, how would you order them from most desirable to least and why? I'm new to reloading and have been collecting/purchasing .223 brass from various sources. I have observed feeding frenzies over LC stamps but not so much others A headstamp is the markings on the bottom of a cartridge case designed for a firearm. It usually tells who manufactured the case. Military headstamps usually have only the year of manufacture . The left cartridge's headstamp says FC 223 REM which means that it was made by Federal Cartridge Co. and it is in the caliber .223 Remington .223 Remington R-P Certified Once-Fired Brass - 100 count. All Remington-Peters Headstamp ** DISCLAIMER: Some of the Remington-Peters Rifle brass has a circular mark just beneath the case neck which is an impression left by the piston hole ring attachment that pressure checks the brass. We had samples sent in and tested to ensure that it DOES NOT compromise the integrity of the brass Included in the brass bucket were several RP 223 REM (I'm assuming Remington Peters) cases that I'll be starting with so I can start shooting now while still learning how to prepare the military cases. I'm sure that the military case prep will be trivial once I've done it, but I haven't yet
2. WCC, IMI, and I think one other headstamp have nearly identical case volumes. PMC, S&B, and Remington (RP) likewise, are nearly identical on case volumes. Any reason not to group those together (2 groups)? 3. Last one - I've read many threads on the 'questionable' value of FC .223 brass. I've been separating these, but am I wrong in assuming. Discussion Starter · #1 · Dec 17, 2013. I just received and I ve starting cleaning 100 pieces of .223 and 5.56 brass. I have not taken a count, but many seem to have crimped primers. I will be better able to make this call after they are cleaned. Some of the cases have .223 stamped, but many others have markings that I am not familiar with Headstamp Codes. Codes are listed by number codes, then in alphabetical order from A to Z, followed by a list of suspect codes at the end. *Note 1- Headstamps often contain multiple pieces of information. The maker is almost always identified. Military ammunition usually includes date information, and civilian ammunition often has caliber.
All of the WCC I pickup becomes .300 BLK. I like that there's no .223 or 5.56x45 in the headstamp. LC would be fine, but that goes to .223/5.56 production, I find a lot more if it and I shoot a lot more .223 Rem than .300 BLK. Neck thickness data: *Factory Blackout brass* Gemtech (factory 300 BLK) - 0.011 PNW Arms - 0.011 RP - 0.010. Keep and reload the major brands (LC, Federal, Winchester, Hornady, RP, PMC, Wolf, etc), and recycle all of the oddball, unrecognizable headstamps. Since you're making plinking ammo, just resize spent brass with 223 full body die, swage, and trim to uniform case length like 1.750. I just bought a bunch of it and it works great. I have heard complaints about the Federal civilan 223 brass. This headstamp would be Federal with the caliber .223. Military brass should have the initials of the manufacturer (FC) and the year of manufacture with no caliber I purchased some ammo online advertised as .223. When it arrived, the ammo is packaged in cardboard boxes labeled 5.56mm Ball XM193A OK, this is not .223 Rem that I thought I was getting for my Mini-14. Have read enough to know that it is unwise to put 5.56 through a rifle chambered for .223 even though the cartridges are nearly identical

Can't answer definitively, but I had a huge box of 5.56 brass mostly LC and FC. I took all the mixed LC headstamps, processed them, and worked up a load, then shot about 250 or so from a stock 700 bolt gun with excellent results. When I verified my load I put 10 through 1 ragged hole about half moa The only time I separated my 223 brass by headstamp was when I was using a 223 Remmy BDL with a varmint barrel. I was loading near or at max and wanted the most consistent shot to shot accuracy. I can't recall any particular USA mfd brand being superior to the others. I've since replaced the 223 Remmy with a 22-250
The 223 Remington Cartridge does use 0.224 bullets, like all modern 22 cal centerfire cartridges. Naming of cartridges is largely arbitrary - the 218 Bee, 22 Hornet, 220 Swift, 22-250, 222rem, 223rem, 224 wby mag, and 225 Winchester for example all use the same 0.224 bullet diameter, even though their names reflect a lot of different numbers HEADSTAMP R-P 223 REM. Problem is, I only have about 200 pieces of it, and I can't find any once fired RP in stock anywhere, and I don't want to pay the prices for new brass. Can I expect any problems if I switch to WCC brass, of which I have thousands of prepped pieces on hand ready to load RP (due to primer pockets) FC One last point: Although the advice to segregate brass by brand and year is excellent, the rule of thumb that military brass has less capacity than commercial brass is far more true for .308 brass than .223/5.56 in the link below are results for capacity and brass weight:.223 / 5.5
Turns out they were all CBC headstamps. Every blazer was perfect, I'm assuming I set it up with a blazer, and all RP was perfect. Win was ever so slightly over crimped as was sig. This may be a common thing but this was my first run with range brass as I usually only pick up my own. Thought it to be strange that one particular headstamp is that.
